Before the season even began, Derrick Rose was quoted in an interview saying, “Why can’t I be MVP?  Why can’t I be the best player in the league?”  I know when I first read this, I kind of chuckled.  For the first two seasons of Derrick Rose’s career, he has been nothing but stellar, but MVP?  Those seemed to be pretty high hopes.

Five months later, it’s another story.  Nobody is laughing anymore.  Nobody but Derrick, as he has turned on ‘beast mode’ and completely humiliated some of his competition.  A week after the All-Star break, Derrick Rose is the leading candidate for MVP and arguably the best point guard in the association.

Over the past three months, D. Rose has answered his critics.  Through his play on the court, he has proven he is the best point guard in the league.  Although he has been criticized as a score first point guard, he has shown that he can make the right pass and distribute the ball (See Miami Heat). Ranked in the top 10 in assists and points, Rose has shown he has an arsenal of weapons that can’t be guarded nor predicted.  He is not your typical point guard because he doesn’t need to be.

Here is how Derrick Rose has fared against the elite point guards in the association:

Going into tonight against the Washington Wizards (15-43), Derrick Rose leads the Chicago Bulls (40-17) to match their win total from last season, the only difference is he is doing it 25 games earlier and fighting for the number one spot in the Easter Conference.

Derrick has risen to the occasion.  With the bright lights on him, there has been no sign of a shadow.  He keeps this type of play up for the next few years and there will be two statues outside the United Center.
